Marvel’s The Punisher – A Look Back at Season 1

Marvel’s The Punisher

Reviewer: Daniel “Nightmare-ACTUAL” Patterson Case # 000-010 Codename: Cerberus

Who is Frank Castle? Francis “Frank” Castle (Born Francis Castiglione) is a fictional American character. Created by writer Gerry Conway, drawn by John Romita Sr; Ross Andru and published by Stan Lee. Stan was the person who greenlit the name;

“The Punisher.”

(Castle first appears in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 1974)

When I was younger, I remember the first time I came into contact with Punisher. It was around 1990 I had gotten NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) for Christmas. As time passed and I gained more video games I came across this very peculiar rail shooter on the Nintendo System. Memories of this game are vague, but I remember playing it. When my birthday came around if I recall correctly, they had given me the Sega Genesis System. Which in its own right Sega had their own version of the Punisher game, I recall PC had their own version, but I didn’t get a chance to play it. Around 1990 I was around 5/6 years old came across the Punisher movie that came out in 1989 that stars Dolph Lundgren then later Thomas Janes I didn’t develop the love I have now for Comic Book characters.

Jumping to the 17th of November 2017, Netflix. The Punisher series premiered on the streaming service. I remember vividly watching the series through and through, twice. This is one of those series that once you start it is hard to stop because the story is captivating. The characters are endearing. You create connections with them. What brought me on to the series originally was that Jon Bernthal was going, to be Frank Castle. Even to that point, I didn’t know anything about The Punisher. Once I saw that news go live that he’s chosen to be the character. Thanks to the advancements in technology I fucking sat down and started reading up on the character. Jon is one the few bromances I have, another one is Stephen Amell. As well some of the guys from this fine organization what allows me to make these articles. I am among a lot of people who I really admire; Stephen, Dave, Brian, Chris, Chris, Mat, and Danny I’ve had the privilege to work alongside them.  Just some of the ones off the top of my head at the moment of writing this. Pretty sure, I’ve seen almost every movie he has been in. He is one of those few actors where acting comes naturally.

Now onto the subject matter.

After an event that occurred in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Frank’s family has been murdered. He sets out to find those responsible and bring them to justice, his own. They know him in the streets as “The Punisher” but his name is Frank and there will be blood. After his time in Hell’s Kitchen with “Red” (Daredevil), We find our Anti Hero trying to make a living in the city of New York, as Pete Castiglione. That is all I want to say about the storyline. I want you the viewer to go into the series with no expectations, watch it as it is. Watch it as this series pushes boundaries. One aspect that really stood out in the series for me is the music. Can you imagine a world without music? Holy shit as an Audio Engineer I would not like to imagine such a world. I for one really enjoyed what the series brought to fruition the cinematography, the storytelling, the mood and the camaraderie these soldiers have with one another.

I believe we all need a friend like Curtis Hoyle in our lives;

If I were to give the series a rating it would have to a 9/10 if not a 10/10. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes series and or movies based off of Comic Books. There’s also another side of this that I am not going into much detail as to why this series resonates with me. I am a volunteer for a military organization, as a civilian. Within the organization, I have the privilege to be part of something bigger than myself. I am part of one of their programs the Stack Up Overwatch Program or the STOP Squad for short were we help people in crisis so through them, I’ve had the privilege to speak to a lot of veteran and active duty servicemen and woman. Just like Curtis Hoyle says I talk to them because at the same time I am talking to myself.

In Memoriam; Maria Castle, Frank Castle Jr, Lisa Castle, Gunner Henderson.

Season 2 of The Punisher has already released on Netflix. Let’s see how the circumstances at the end of the first season influence what’s to come in the next season. I for one am super excited to see the newest entry into the Punisher Universe, are you ready?

Nightmare, out. (Through my volunteering efforts I would like to extend my gratitude to all servicemen and woman)
