Redshirt Roundtable: July 2022

It's time for another Redshirt Roundtable and thanks to eSkilliam, this month is all about villains! The questions we asked this month are:

  • When you hear "Villain" who are some of the first video game, comic, movie or tv characters that come to mind for you?

  • Who is your favorite villain(s) in any media? List as many as you like.

  • What traits about these villains appeal to you?

  • If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

When you hear "Villain" who are some of the first video game, comic, movie or tv characters that come to mind for you?

Joker, Dr. Doom, Lex Luthor, Xanatos from Gargoyles, Sephiroth, Virgil from Devil may cry are just the first ones that hit dependent on the context.

Who is your favorite villain(s) in any media? List as many as you like.

I love the Magnificent Bastard trope, so while I love the Joker for the force of nature he is, or the Sephiroth for the level of a challenge and represents in the course of the story. I have to give it to Xanatos from Disney's Gargoyles. The man has a trope named after him where its a plan whose every foreseen outcome all benefits its creator to some degree.

What traits about these villains appeal to you?

I love a villain that are brilliant and utterly devious to the point to where is fun to just watch them do their thing. The ones that are chessmasterly in planning, but doesn't lose their cool when they are outplayed. The more charismatic and charming the villain is the more wonderful the third act breakdown will be when they become that withering, mad, gibbering wreck, unless of course they forgo that and begrudgingly accept the loss or even accepted the possibility going into the situation and just congratulate the hero as they make an escape. I revel when they attain their goal through a gambit so thoroughly planned that it puts Patton to shame and honestly mourn their defeat when they do inevitably lose. Think of an evil Ironman and I swear that is the type of villain I love to see drive the story.

If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

I wouldn't name myself because goal one, don't draw attention even after I won, I would like to do the rare thing and retire. The newspapers could give me or whatever poor soul I would make sure it all got pinned on, some cute nickname that would be printed in History books and studied by further generations. My origin story? Have you read the news that's came out this century? My goal would be mine to know and yours to find out, there is no knowledge that isn't power and I am not about to help you stop me.

Vegeta, Stain, Light Yagami, Illadin

What traits about these villains appeal to you?

Being the Strongest no matter what - Vegeta | seeing the corruption in the world and seeing that the justice system doesn't punish the miscreants of society - Stain | having the will to do what is right even if it means sacrificing my soul - Light yagami |

If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

Origin - finding happiness finally and then it being stripped away with the death of my family. Villian goal - destroy the corruption of the world and bring back the light of justice. Even if it means selling my soul for power on the streets in the city of brass. i will scar the earth with my legacy so that everyone will know there will always be something lurking in the shadows, during the brightest day or blackest night no evil will leave my sight.

What traits about these villains appeal to you?

The pure evil of this character made Venom team up with Spider-Man making some of my favorite interactions that made Venom become and anti hero for a bit.

If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

I would call myself "the obscured" probably would have the ability similar to the chameleon where he can morph into anyone tho I would be able to become anything. Guess my evil goal would be to obtain all the secrets of any organizations that hold power and sell that information to their rivals for profit.

Hard to go far in this culture without thinking about greats like Bowser, Mother Brain, Ganon, Dr. Robotnik, and Dr. Wiley. As far as comics, Magneto and Shredder come to mind.

Who is your favorite villain(s) in any media? List as many as you like.

As bad as I was at the game, Rocksteady and BeeBop in the original TMNT for the NES. I really loved the design of Ridley and Kraid(and all the rest of the Metroid villians for that reason.) The Koopalings were also really cool. I mean there's Darth Vader too. Who hasn't wanted to be Darth Vader at one point in their life?

What traits about these villains appeal to you?

The Koopalings all had their own unique yet cool looking style. The Metroid bosses just downright looked creepy-cool. I guess it comes down to looks for me. I appreciate a well dressed heinous henchmen.

If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

Off the cuff here, but... Prepare yourself for MayoMan! Creeping through the shadows flavoring the sandwiches(and Pizzas) of the unwitting and unwilling, in his evil yet tasty journey toward TOTAL MAYO DOMINATION! Beware the slathers from the shadows!

When you hear "Villain" who are some of the first video game, comic, movie or tv characters that come to mind for you?

The Evil Queen, Darth Vader, Killmonger, Maleficent, Loki, Hela, easy for me because I have a bunch of Villain collectibles around my room.

Who is your favorite villain(s) in any media? List as many as you like.

The Evil Queen, Darth Vader, Loki, Sylvie, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Lex Luthor.

What traits about these villains appeal to you?

The Evil Queen on Once Upon a Time was just really broken down by her abuse and ended up taking matters into her own hands to find her way out of things. She goes about it real messed up but ends up learning and regaining those parts of her that she lost to her revenge by the end of that show she's redeemed. Darth Vader's rage and wrath and passion is what brought him to the dark side. It's like he gave into it and that's what he became. Many of these villains start out with good intentions: Poison Ivy cares about the environment. Harley Quinn cared about the Joker, Sylvie just wanted to know why she couldn't continue her life as it was, Loki just wants attention, Lex Luthor wants to protect humanity. But there is always something that causes them to go off the deep end. Something where they're too intense about pursuing their goals. The means by which they pursue them often end up messy. Some of these villains end up doing good in spots so they're not entirely lost, they're just misguided and often times the heroes were a catalyst for pushing them over. A few of these villains end up being anti-heroes more than anything.

If you were a villain, what would you name yourself? What would be your villain origin? Villain goal?

I'd be a lowkey villain. Something without a true name. Mysterious. My origin would be witnessing corruption and my goal would be to end that corruption to a point of villainry. I'd probably be more of an anti-hero.
