Redshirt Roundtable: March - Latest Games & Media

It's the end of March, and with that, we have another Redshirt Roundtable ready to go for our community. For anyone outside of our community, this is our monthly blog post where we ask our Redshirts questions on topics from gaming to mental health to other nerdy topics, and they give us their answers.

For the month of March, we asked the following questions:

  • What are 1-3 game(s) you've been enjoying lately? (Tabletop or Video)

  • What makes your chosen game(s) so enjoyable?

  • What are some movies/shows/comics you've been watching that you enjoyed?

  • What movies or shows are you looking forward to seeing this year?

  • What makes your chosen movies/shows/comics so enjoyable?

  • What games are you looking forward to playing this year?

Let's get to it then!

What are 1-3 game(s) you've been enjoying lately? (Tabletop or Video)

Elden Ring, Elden Ring, and Elden Ring \[T]/

What makes your chosen game(s) so enjoyable?

I guess I just like pain...?

What are some movies/shows/comics you've been watching that you enjoyed?

The new Cuphead cartoon on Netflix is great!

What movies or shows are you looking forward to seeing this year?

Honestly don't know about new movies or shows. All I know is Elden Ring.

What makes your chosen movies/shows/comics so enjoyable?

What makes Cuphead the game so awesome is its classic "Steamboat Willie" style, and that is carried right over into the show. It's goofy, has a great cast, and definitely feels like it fits right in with the game and not some jaunty spin-off.

What games are you looking forward to playing this year?

Elden Ring. (and I guess Starfield?)

What are 1-3 game(s) you've been enjoying lately? (Tabletop or Video)

New is a strong word. I've been playing three old games lately. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I guess that means I like games that have subtitles in their title and that are easy to abbreviate.

What makes your chosen game(s) so enjoyable?

Each has its own merits. ACNH is fun because it's so simple, but it has a lot of stuff to collect and follows a real-time clock, unless you time travel your console, so it doesn't feel rushed each day to do stuff. BotW is just a gorgeous world. I've had all four divine beasts beaten for over a year now, and I just haven't bothered to kill Ganon. Zelda has been holding him off for 100 years. What's one more? Those Koroks aren't going to find themselves. ED:O, that scratches the space nerd itch. There are so many star systems in the game it is basically impossible that the current population of the Earth, not just the player base, will ever discover every single system in the game. Sure, a lot of them are kind of meh, but when you're out poking around using real-world scientific data combined with knowledge of how the procedural generation functions, those random gems you find are worth it. That planet with the crazy cool view? The system with massive dying stars deep on the end of a galactic arm? It's the ultimate "Just one more turn" game.

What are some movies/shows/comics you've been watching that you enjoyed?

I recently watched War Dogs for movies. Television I've been watching The Rookie with Nathan Fillion. It scratches that "Castle" itch, probably because Mr. Fillion hires most of the cast of Castle to be on The Rookie. I also watched Inside Job on the recommendation of someone in Stack Up. That filled the gap in my "silly cartoons made for adults" genre.

What movies or shows are you looking forward to seeing this year?

It's already out in theatres, and I think on some streaming platforms, but I'm looking forward to catching up on the new Spiderman movie. I'm not super into watching MCU films, so I'm sure I will miss out on some of the details big fans of the MCU will catch, but I really enjoy Tom Holland as Spiderman. I'll be quite sad if they really do replace him since I think he's probably the most true to character we've ever had. Sorry Toby and Andrew fans, I'm just not interested in seeing a trilogy about the origin story again. I suppose along those lines, the new Batman is supposed to be good too. From what I hear, they finally moved away from it being yet another origin story as well.

Oh, and Clarkson's Farm Season 2.

What makes your chosen movies/shows/comics so enjoyable?

I should really read these ahead of time. As I mentioned, for the shows, they fill a gap that was left behind by having finished watching other series they are similar to. For The Rookie, while it's not the same plot, it's very similar to Castle in the pacing and character development. Heck, they literally use a ton of the cast of Castle in The Rookie as supporting characters.

For Clarkson's Farm, honestly, Jeremy Clarkson is an amusing man. It was really interesting seeing him working on his own farm through the 2019/2020 season as he learned. The cast is small, but they are interesting. I can't really describe why it's interesting. I suppose if I had to try, I would say it's a cross between a lifestyle I'm familiar with, farming, and Jeremy's silly antics, such as driving a modified Bentley across the farm at high speed to take water off the shelves in his farm store because it didn't pass safety inspection.

What games are you looking forward to playing this year?

I don't think it will come out this year, but Breath of the Wild 2 would be one that is on my list. I have a large back catalog, like most people I know, so I'm trying my best to play things I already own before I buy new stuff. I'm looking forward to Switch Sports. I'm not super hyped that it is going to be another "We're releasing it in the Spring, but we promise to add more content for free in the future" like ACNH was, but Nintendo has at least followed up on those promises of keeping the content rolling for free. I would have liked to have seen more content in it from the start, but the BETA test was fun enough for me to consider it when it launches late next month.

What games are you looking forward to playing this year?

I want to build my chops up some on World of Warships, hit my goals in Warcraft, and see if I can get into Lost Ark since people are telling me it's great! I also want to go through Wolfenstein 2 and Metro Exodus, both of which I have waiting on me. Also wouldn't mind going through Gears of War 4 at some point. I have too much of a backlog for new games, lol.
