Supply Crate – Kyle

Kyle requested a Supply Crate for his unit because the soldiers in his company have been getting into trouble off base and he wanted to provide them a gaming lounge so they have another option for activities that aren't off base.

I am the First Sergeant for Headquarters Support Company, 8th Army. BLUF: I have a lot of Soldiers stationed here on 1 to 2 year tours without their family and with little resources available other than what's right outside the gate. If you've ever been to Camp Humphreys in the last 5 to 10 years, you will know that the new barracks built here do not have dayrooms. Being stationed in Korea is a lot different than in the states for many reasons. For the majority of Soldiers here, they aren't allowed to have a personal vehicle, and they are here unaccompanied (their families are back stateside). When I was a younger Soldier there were dayrooms in the barracks for Soldiers to hang out in as an alternative to going off-post every weekend. The new barracks don't have dayrooms, and these Soldiers are left with only one option for fun on the weekends: going outside the main gate and visiting the bars, or traveling around Korea. I highly encourage and support Soldiers to travel around Korea on the weekends. However, I'm seeking a care package because I want to provide my Soldiers with more options. Lately I have had an uptick of Soldiers getting in trouble off-post. This is a serious matter because when a Soldier receives a foreign criminal conviction for things like fighting or even saying a curse word, commanders are required to initiate separation. I have 3 Soldiers that are being processed for separation right now for these very reasons, and it kills me to put them through that. I already have a TV and a lounge area setup at my Company Headquarters. If you support my request, I will add gaming systems and anything you send my way to that lounge and I will make that lounge accessible 24/7 to Soldiers so they can have a private space to relax without the risk of getting in trouble.

Having formerly served, we know just the kinds of trouble soldiers can get themselves into when off base and when alcohol is involved. While plenty of people are level-headed, it doesn't take much for that to change in an instant and for someone to get into the kind of trouble that ends their Military career early. We admire Kyle's resolve to create a place where soldiers can relax and have fun without putting themselves in a position to get into trouble.

Sorry for the delay! My unit is conducting field training at the moment until August 29. I snapped a photo from our game room. It needs some work, lol. We’re hoping to develop it some more but the soldiers are really happy to have the system setup in the office. It has been really helpful to provide the soldiers with a place to relax during their lunch breaks, and I definitely see an increase in motivation and work output.

We're just glad we could help some, Kyle. Maybe once higher-ups with the power to invest in a full lounge see the difference a console can make, they'll get the ball rolling in getting a full lounge set up.
