December 8th, 2016 Supply Crate Deployment-
What a beautiful day at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California. The Marines were out in force during their Jingle Bell Jog and Stronger Warrior event, where units stationed there were competing in various games to win a cash prize helping with their Marine Corps ball fund.
The esprit de corps was palpable and as I was mingling with these wonderful men and women, I was reminded of the incredible bonds that form among such tight-knit groups of individuals. As a veteran, I was envious of that camaraderie – that fellowship.
It’s a difficult thing to explain just how attached you become to that feeling of family, trust and kinship. And it was that reminiscence and that nostalgia for those times that served to remind me why I was there.
During the holidays, it’s easy to get lost in memories of home and of family. There can be a distinct and powerful sense of sadness and loneliness and it is exactly for this reason that being able to provide them with something fun and engaging can help alleviate these feelings.
Seeing their faces light up and hearing them cheer and gasp at all the goodies made me feel good. It made me feel like what we were doing there was truly a beneficial thing, that we were really helping. We were making a difference in their lives. It was a beautiful day indeed at MCAS Miramar. And the weather wasn’t bad either.
