One of the biggest surprise announcements coming out of PlayStation Experience was the collaboration between international video game studios Saber Interactive, and Paramount Pictures, the studio that brought you movies like Interstellar, Iron Man, Forrest Gump, and the Transformers Series. Coming in 2018, Saber Interactive and Paramount Pictures are releasing World War Z, a co-op first-person shooter based on the book and movie of the same name.
The game will be a co-op shooter, taking place across the planet as the nations of the world deal with a sudden, extinction-level crisis. Cities are falling and countries are burning, following a massive outbreak of crazed, afflicted humans, stampeding and claiming thousands. Experts believe a virus has infected and turned normal humans into something that they refuse to accept is a reality: zombies.
As the infection spreads through bites, the outbreak has exploded, claiming a large number of cities in a mere matter of hours. This virus has now broken out across the Earth, with a handful of cities and remote locations still holding off the epidemic. The race is on to protect what’s left and hopefully, discover a cure. Players will be working together across the planet, using a variety of weapons to complete objectives and stay alive. Some of these weapons include traps, barriers, and devastating military power.
The game, World War Z, will be closely based on the novel of the same name, which was originally released in 2006 by author Max Brooks. The novel was a follow-up to the 2003 smash-hit, The Zombie Survival Guide, an incredibly popular book that became a huge sensation amongst young readers. World War Z took the epidemic of zombies and made the premise plausible, with the books exploring themes such as ineptitude, short-sightedness, corruption, uncertainty, and survivalism. The book became a critical and commercial success, which caught the attention of Paramount Pictures. The movie studios secured the rights to the book and released a movie adaptation of the book in June 2013, starring Brad Pitt. While the movie does stray from the source material, it didn’t stop the movie from being a solid box-office performer that was well-received by critics and filmgoers.
World War Z, the video game, arrives in 2018 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam.
